How to Make Earrings

How to Make Earrings

Are you a jewelry nut? Maybe you should learn how to make earrings and bracelets on your own. This is totally feasible. All you need is the right supplies and proper instructions.

Have you ever considered learning how to make earrings? Believe it or not, a number of women already do this. Last week at a crafts fair I spoke with a lady who has been crafting her own jewelry for some time now. I’m talking like 25 years. If you had seen what she sells them for you’d go ballistic. After speaking with her, I got the impression that supplies are not very expensive in comparison to the payback. She said her grandmother had shown her how to make earrings and she decided to make it into a regular business. She also crafted a variety of bracelets and necklaces. Some pieces sold for well over a grand. I think that says it all. Even if you choose to use expensive metals in your personally crafted jewelry, it would still be cheaper than buying it from a jewelry store. Anyway, once my teenage daughter saw this business, she too wanted to learn how to make earrings, bracelets and necklaces. She is currently trying to start her very own business online. I have to say that cyberspace would be the ideal place to market such a thing.

Do you know how to make earrings yet?  There are numerous online stores that sell jewelry supplies such as beads for a very low cost. You can even teach your little ones how to make earrings on their own. If you’re lucky, maybe this will steer them away form the shopping malls when they’re older.

Mexican Silver Jewelry

Mexican Silver Jewelry

Mexican silver jewelry seems to be steadily coming in style all over again.  Mexico has some of the richest deposits on silver in the world, and Mexican silver jewelry has thus found its ways all over the world in the last several centuries.  The native Mayan and Aztec peoples had lived in what is now Mexico for hundreds of years without ever knowing the value of gold or silver, but fortunately for them some helpful Europeans came over in the 16th century and taught them.  Now Mexican silver jewelry is a trademark of that region of the world, consisting of one of Mexico’s largest exports.

All jesting aside, the combination of Christian (European) influences and the native religions that existed in the area already has come together to form an interesting and unique blend of a culture that is beautifully expressed in Mexican silver jewelry.  Silver workers and jewelry makers in Mexico put an intense amount of thought, creativity, and effort into their work, and are fiercely proud of what they produce.

So much Mexican silver jewelry has been made over the years that there is a very good chance that the silver you see displayed in the mall you frequent came from Mexico.  Most of the time, jewelry venders in the United States, or other areas of the world do not advertise that their product was made in Mexico, though this may be changing.  Many people tend to think ‘Hecho en Mexico’ (made in Mexico) is a stamp suggesting sub-standard quality, but they couldn’t be more wrong when it comes to silver Mexican silver jewelry is some of the most unique, creative, and intricately worked silver jewelry in the world.

If you take a trip to Mexico, which I often do, I recommend picking up some Mexican silver jewelry while you’re there.  Even if you don’t wear it yourself, Mexican silver jewelry makes a great gift for any jewelry wearers you know.  Silver is one of those metals that you can’t really go wrong with.  It is timeless, and matches everything, so women generally love it.

If you are in Mexico itself, you can usually get some great deals on genuine Mexican silver jewelry.  If you are buying it in person in Mexico, some bargaining skills may save you a lot of money, but just remember that the person you’re buying it from probably doesn’t make very much money.

“Gothic Jewelry”

“Gothic Jewelry”

Gothic Jewelry are great pieces of fashionable jewelry. Are you Goth? This is such a big phenomenon these days. I have to wonder where in the heck it ever originated in the first place. I mean, why did certain individuals all of the sudden decide they were going to be Goth? Don’t get me wrong now; I don’t have a problem with it or anything like that. I was simply wondering how it ever came to be. Now days it’s an identity associated with rebellion. Teenagers typically choose to be Goth as a way to resist conforming to the basic social standards. Maybe they’re always angry at their parents, or simply feel ostracized by their peers at school. Well, one thing is for sure; we have no shortage of Gothic individuals in America. Maybe that’s why you see so much gothic jewelry being sold in the shopping malls.

There is an utter plethora of gothic jewelry available in cyberspace. If you simply get on your personal computer and punch the terms “gothic jewelry” into your search engine, you will be amazed. I used to live in one of the big Goth areas. Well, at least it seemed to be one of the Gothic hot spots. Back in 2001 I moved to Salem, Oregon and there were Goth teenagers roaming around all over town. It must relate back to their rainy weather. Go figure! Since there were Gothic individuals at every turn, you can imagine that there was no shortage of gothic jewelry in this town. This goes especially for all the piercings. The Gothic folks I met there in college had oodles of piercings. Actually a tad too many for my taste. But then again, I’m not Goth. They were sporting tongue barbells, which I think has been done to death. Some had the bull ring in their noses and several piercings in their ears and eyebrows. I even met one guy who said he pierced his nipples. I’m not so sure that’s a manly thing to do. Anyway, you get the point. There was plenty of gothic jewelry and piercings to go around.

Maybe you’re considering becoming a Goth. That’s cool! To each his/her own as I always say. If you’re looking to purchase some straight-up gothic jewelry, I would definitely suggest that you go with the less permanent stuff first. You want to see if Goth is a lifestyle/trend that actually suits you, before you make the full flip.

Vintage Costume Jewelry

 Vintage Costume Jewelry

There are so many sources for costumes and vintage costume jewelry now days. With Halloween drawing near, we need all the help we can get. This stuff sells so fast. I think everyone must want to acquire the best costume available for some party or competition. At least you would think so where I live. This is the very reason why I shop around for Halloween costumes and vintage costume jewelry a ways in advance. Hey, I want to attain what I’m after as well. And as we all know, the early bird gets the worm. This year my wife wants to dress up like a flapper from the 40s or 20 or something rather. Heck, what do I know; I’m just the guy who goes searching for the best costume. And you know what? I think I found it in cyberspace.

The Internet will provide you with plenty of options when it comes to vintage costume jewelry and scary outfits for Halloween. However, just like any Halloween superstore, you have to get there before everyone else does. This means buying in August if you can. Go all out and find your perfect costume before everyone else gets their grubby hands on all the good stuff. Remember there are six billion people on this planet, and tons of them have access to the World-Wide-Web. Now, your goal is to purchase before all of them do. So get on the ball as early as you can. Since I decided to go as a vampire this year, I required some vintage costume jewelry. Okay, so it’s basically just an amulet for around my neck. I’m not quite sure what it’s supposed to do though. It just came with the costume. Maybe it holds the secret to all of Dracula’s power or something. Ah, that’s what I’ll tell the kids anyway.

You don’t necessarily have to search through a Halloween costume shop to find vintage costume jewelry. This stuff can be found all over at a variety of jewelry sites. Search for the phrase “vintage costume jewelry” or simply “vintage jewelry” . This should open up a whole slew of doors. Sort through numerous websites to find exactly what you’re looking for. Don’t settle for cheap, junky vintage costume jewelry. Cyberspace is too massive to not find what you want.

Certified Loose Diamonds

Certified Loose Diamonds

Trends are changing, and going out to buy a huge diamond in a ring isn’t the most popular thing to do anymore. Sure, it’s still common, and many people enjoy looking over already-set gems in stunning gold or silver bands, but the growing availability of loose diamonds is changing the jewelery marketplace. The Internet is becoming a popular place for sourcing out loose diamonds cut to express more individuality. But how do you shop for them?

Before you begin shopping, you should have an idea of what type of ring you have in mind. The setting you want can hide imperfections, or, on the other hand, it may require a stone without flaws. Also, the color of the metal can affect the look of loose diamonds. A stone that has a yellowish cast can end up looking much darker when paired with a gold metal. Knowing the size of stone you’d like means you won’t have to sift and sort through different shapes unnecessarily.

When you’re viewing them at a retail store you’ll notice that they are kept in clear containers. A solid or coloured container will affect the color of the stone and won’t let you see the true clarity of the loose diamonds. Also, the bottom of the container should be a piece of white foam so as to help show off the true color of the diamond. Sometimes, the containers show off loose diamonds of similar size and shape, in case clients want to make a set that includes earrings and a ring. Ask to see the loose diamonds outside of the container; gem dealers should always have magnifying glasses or loupes available for close-up viewing.

Like stones already set in rings, you should look for the four ‘C’s’:  Color, carat, clarity and cut. Color refers to the shade or hue of the gem, carat refers to the size of the loose diamond, clarity refers to flaws and imperfections that can reduce the value, and cut refers to the actual cut of the gem. All four ‘C’s’ can affect whether loose diamonds can be set in a chosen setting, how they’ll look against the preferred metal, and the end-result market value of the ring, so be sure to do your homework to know the anatomy of loose diamonds.

The cost of these stones is far less than a stone already set in a ring, for the simple reason that the labour of crafting the ring and setting the stone isn’t included in the selling price. Anyone shopping for loose diamonds with the intention of having them set should keep in mind that, while you’re paying a lower price for your gem, you’ll need to budget in the further cost of having your ring crafted. Most jewellers will be happy to work with you to custom-make your ring with loose diamonds, but they’ll charge you accordingly, so make sure that special, individual ring you want doesn’t end up breaking your budget.

Opal Earrings

Opal Earrings

My birthday is in the month of October. As I was growing up I was giving several different pieces of jewelry with my birthstone. The birthstone that is most often shown for the month of October is a bright pink zircon. I have never cared too much for the birthstone jewelry because the stone has a cheap look to me. I happened to mention this to my husband one day when we were looking into a jewelry case. The sales clerk over heard me and said that the actual birthstone for October is opal. She stated that pink zircon was often substituted because opal is such a soft stone so it does not wear as well. Many people like to wear birthstone pieces on a daily basis and opal does not stand up to that kind or wear.

I have always liked opals. There are many colors of opal as well as the traditional milky stone. Our wedding anniversary was a few weeks after we had the conversation with the jewelry clerk. For our anniversary we went out for dinner to one of our favorite restaurants. After we ordered our dinner my husband handed me a beautifully wrapped gift box. Inside was a pair of opal earrings. I was very pleased with the gift. The opal earrings were a fiery blue color that had many other colors as they reflected the soft lighting in the restaurant. The waitress had appeared with our salads as I was still admiring the opal earrings. She stated that her birthday is in October so that the opal is her favorite gem stone. I explained to her that I had just recently learned that the opal was my birthstone. As we were discussing October birthdays we discovered that we had been born on the same day.

Our laughing and lengthy conversation brought the manager over. He noticed the gift wrap on the table from the box that the opal earrings had been in. He asked if it was my birthday. We explained that it was our wedding anniversary. The manager had a bottle of wine sent to the table to help us celebrate the occasion. At the end of the meal a group of the waiters and waitresses brought over a piece of cake for us to share and sang us an anniversary wish. I told my husband that we should take anniversary gifts along to restaurants all the time if it meant free wine, dessert and special treatment.

The next day I wore my opal earrings to work. My co-workers thought they were very attractive.

Pet Jewelry

Pet Jewelry

Pet jewelry is on of the hottest new trends in jewelery to look out for. Pet jewelry is simply jewelry made for your cat or dog. It is autumn which usually means that there will be many arts and crafts sales. I like to go to a few of the sales to get ideas for projects as well as to find holiday gifts. It seems that each year there is something new that the crafters have come up with. A few years ago it was at a craft fair that I saw the hand crocheted fuzzy scarves that became so popular. I was curious to see what would be new this year.

My sister and her adult daughter came to our house to attend the local arts and crafts fair. As we were walking across the parking area I noticed a woman with a small dog on a leash. The dog looked like it had something shiny on one of its front paws. As we got closer I realized it was a bracelet. My niece asked the dog owner where she bought the dog’s bracelet. The women said that pet jewelry is one of the new items that many of the crafters were featuring.

As we walked around the different booths we noticed that there were several displays of pet jewelry. Most of the crafters that create beaded items have branched into beaded pet jewelry. They sold sets of four bracelets so that the dog or cat could wear one on each foot. There were necklaces as well as beaded belts. My niece and I were laughing about getting pet jewelry for my husband’s hunting dogs. One of the crafters overheard us and showed me a set of camouflage bracelets that were beaded with green, brown and black beads. I thought it would be fun to put them on the dogs. She also had hunting caps for dogs. I also bought two of them.

My niece loves my two cats. She thought the cats would feel left out if they did not have pet jewelry so she bought each of them a bracelet set. I told her that I did not think the cats would leave them on, but we took them anyway. When we arrived home we had about fifteen minute to get the dogs ready before my husband got home. We put the bracelets on the dogs and placed the hats on their heads. The hats were held in place with a strap. The dogs looked very cute. The cats were not happy to have something wrapped around their paws. It was funny watching them try to shake the pet jewelry off their hind legs.
